Resident Virtual Artist Yinkore

OPENFEED announces its first Virtual Residency, featuring the talented artist Yinkore. Her residency will focus on "Threaded Lineage," a captivating 3-5 piece visual art series that delves into the profound cultural, familial, and spiritual inheritance woven into the act of sewing. Yinkore's personal matrilineal story serves as the inspiration for this project, tracing the legacy of tailoring from her great-grandmother, who passed the skill to her grandmother, and subsequently to her mother, creating a rich tapestry of artistry and tradition.

Workshop Overview

This hands-on, discussion-based workshop explores the theme of passing things down (skills, stories, etc) and how digital art can act as a vessel for cultural preservation. Participants will be invited to reflect on something they’ve inherited (or wish they had) and reinterpret it visually through basic lines/ pattern design digitally.

Workshop

Components:

  • Introduction (15 mins):
A personal story about my own sewing inheritance, supported by visuals from Threaded Lineage. This frames the larger conversation: what do we lose when practical skills are no longer passed down?

  • Guided Discussion (30 mins):
    – What skills or knowledge have been passed down in your family or community?
    – Have you ever felt the loss of a tradition or craft?
    – What role can technology or art play in preserving that?

  • Activity (45 mins):
Participants will sketch or digitally design a small pattern, motif, or symbol that represents something meaningful they’ve inherited or lost. Ideally done with tablets, (if available) or on paper, in absence of sufficient tablets.

Sharing & Reflection (15–30 mins):
A few participants share their patterns and stories.
